What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are a tooth alignment option that uses clear plastic trays to shift your teeth into optimal positioning. They’re a solid alternative to traditional metal braces.

Many people want a straighter smile, but don’t want a gleaming metallic grin as they go through their orthodontic treatment. For adults, clear aligners offer the chance to improve alignment without the visual distraction of metal brackets and wires.

Once your aligners are in place, most people don’t even notice you’re wearing them. You can speak and smile normally, and aligners won’t show up during video conferencing or in photos.

Clear aligners are also more gentle on your soft tissues than metal braces. There is no concern about wires poking your cheeks or gums, or metal brackets abrading the inside of your lips or cheeks.

What kinds of alignment issues can clear aligners correct?

Clear aligners can correct many of the same alignment issues as traditional metal braces. Some examples of treatable cases include:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Mix of permanent and baby teeth
  • General misalignment

There are some cases where metal braces offer a better solution. The metal brackets, wires, hooks, and other devices allow your orthodontic team to create unique types of force that clear aligners cannot replicate.

McGill Orthodontics offers Invisalign® and the Spark™ clear aligner system. Both options can help create a gorgeous and healthy smile.

What is it like to wear clear aligners?

If you decide to move forward with clear aligners, digital impressions gather the information needed to craft your trays. Once the trays arrive, you come in to learn how to place and remove them.

You wear your aligners around the clock, removing them only while eating and drinking and during oral hygiene routines. Brushing and flossing your teeth is easy with aligners because there are no brackets and wires providing places for plaque and food particles to hide.

Every couple of weeks, you switch to a new set of aligner trays. This keeps your treatment progress moving forward. Periodic office visits allow your orthodontic team to assess your progress and make adjustments as needed.
