What are braces?
Braces are orthodontic devices that work to straighten your smile. There are different types of braces to choose from, each with a list of pros and cons.
Metal braces
Metal braces use a series of individual brackets affixed to the surface of your teeth. A treatment wire ties the brackets together and creates the pressure needed to slowly shift your teeth into optimal positioning. There are different options to choose from. McGill Orthodontics primarily uses Ormco Digital (Damon Ultima) braces.
Clear aligners
Clear aligners are a tray-based system that uses clear plastic trays that fit directly over the surface of your teeth. The trays place pressure on your teeth, and you switch to a new set every few weeks to move your treatment forward.
During your free orthodontic consultation, you and Dr. McGill will discuss which options are right for your specific orthodontic needs and goals.
How do braces work?
Braces work by placing gentle pressure on your teeth. Over time, this pressure causes your teeth to slowly shift into a new position.
Your orthodontist knows exactly how to craft your treatment plan to move your teeth into proper alignment. With traditional metal braces – treatment wires, hooks, spacers, and elastics create a range of different types of pressure.
With clear aligners trays, minute changes in the shape of the trays create the pressure needed to move your teeth. When you begin wearing a new set of trays, the pressure changes very slightly.
When you come in for your office visit, Dr. McGill will check your progress and make adjustments to your treatment plan as needed.
Is it hard to get used to wearing braces?
It takes some time to get used to the feel of wearing braces. When you first begin treatment with metal braces, it takes a week or so to get used to the feel of the brackets and wires in your mouth.
If you choose clear aligners, you notice the sensation of pressure while wearing them, and the smooth feel of the outside of the aligner trays. No matter which option you choose, before long your braces just become another normal part of your day.
If you ever experience discomfort or a problem with your braces, call the office to book a visit. A degree of soreness is normal after having your braces adjusted, but treatment should never be painful. If you have a broken wire or other problem, the team at McGill Orthodontics can correct the issue.
